Documentation of a performance installation at F-space in Los Angeles. The installation is composed of a large stage (6 x 8 x 4'), audience seating, and copies of King Lear translations on loan from the library. On top of the stage sits a small wooden music box beside two slits in the stage. A portion of the text from Shakespeare's King Lear was taken and then transcribed into Braille format. Then Braille was then transcribed into musical notes for the twenty-note movement music box, set in C major. The five characters within
the specified selection; Edgar, Kent, an Officer, Albany, and King Lear were each given a set of pitch values. When listening to the piece, one is able to differentiate between characters due to this range in pitch. The artist is the operator to the music box, going underneath the stage, from which the music box sits, to operate and maintain the ninety-seven feet of music during the 31 minutes of the entire performance. “King Lear, Act V, Scene III, Transcription for Music Box” Brazilian cherry handmade music box, 6 x 8 x 4' stage, 9 audience chairs, 5 King Lear library books, 97 foot sheet music transcribed from a Braille King Lear book into musical notes, Marya Alford, operator to the music box, 2004.
